The US will be the birthplace of the blues, however Philadelphia-born blues singer Davina Robinson discovered them someplace far, far-off from the U.S., in Japan.

Robinson launched her music profession after transferring to Osaka, the place she discovered an surprising group of jazz and blues musicians. Since then, she’s launched an album, a number of singles, and gained the U.Okay. Songwriting Contest within the blues class in 2020.

On this installment of our Sense of Place: Japan collection, Robinson talks about discovering that group and her voice in Osaka; about her expertise performing and dwelling there as a Black American girl; and the way she has navigated the music scene in a rustic so completely different from the place she grew up.
